The Show and Tell session offered a bevy of beautiful work from several members and Dave Wilkins took us on a review of spindle turning tools and techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Dave&#8217;s presentation gave us an excellent overview of the various tools available for spindle turning including chucking systems. He combined this with instruction on their use and maintenance.<\/p>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_01.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<p>Whereas <a href=\"http:\/\/www.woodworkersguide.com\/2008\/04\/22\/woodturning-spindles-at-the-nwg\/\">Dave&#8217;s previous spindle turning demo<\/a> focused mainly on the skew and spindle gouge tonight&#8217;s demonstration touched on these tools but also introduced the traditional forged &#8216;Continental&#8217; gouge, explained the various sharpening angles and profiles of the these tools, showed the difference in the &#8216;spring&#8217; created with the them, compared the pros and cons of both the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teknatool.com\/products\/Lathe_Accessories\/Centres\/nlc.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Nova Live Center<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oneway.ca\/spindle\/live_center.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Oneway Live Center<\/a> and turned a captured ring using only the skew.<\/p>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_02.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_03.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_04.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<p>This was a great demonstration with a lot of information given through both the presentation and with the answers to the many questions that were asked. I&#8217;m sure that all the members walked away with a tip or two, or at least with the challenge of turning captured rings with only the skew! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Tonight&#8217;s Show and Tell offered several different finishing techniques and projects. Stuart Taylor brought in several bowls that were finished in various colors and shared his technique for these finishes. Just look at these beauties!:<\/p>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_05.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_06.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_07.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<p>Dr. Watson brought in a set of nesting Maple bowls and a laminated vase:<\/p>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_08.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_13.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<p>Dave Wilkins brought in a small African Blackwood bottomless bowl and a hollow vessel made of Elm:<\/p>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_09.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_17.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<p>Ian Scott brought in a large Elm platter and 3 small oil lamps made from various exotic woods:<\/p>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_10.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_14.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<p>Jean-Luc DeClerck brought in a couple of very, very thin footless bowls made out of Maple:<\/p>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_12.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<p>And Mel Delaney brought in a pen made out of bullet casings:<\/p>\n<div id=\"photopost\"><img src='http:\/\/ravenview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_20_09_learning_spindle_turning_at_the_nwg_11.jpg' alt='Learning Spindle Turning At The NWG' \/><\/div>\n<p>There was also a &#8216;warning&#8217; piece brought in by Dan Graham as a &#8216;gentle&#8217; safety reminder. It reminded me a lot of <a href=\"http:\/\/ravenview.com\/2008\/02\/20\/a-spinning-bowl-is-not-a-toy\/\">my own similar experience<\/a>.
