We made this textured African Blackwood box as a Christmas gift for our daughter-in-law and she just loved it!
African Blackwood, also known as Mpingo in Swahili, is a beautiful exotic wood that comes from the dry savanna regions of central and southern Africa. It is considered to be among the hardest and densest of woods in the world. It is such a nice wood to work with and finishes up so beautifully.
It’s approximately 3″ tall and 2.25″ in diameter and textured with a “brick” design that is heavily inspired by our friend, Steven Kennard.
It’s been awhile since we made one of these. They’re always fun to make so this was a real treat. The first ones we made were at a workshop with Steven back in 2011. It was certainly nice to get back to them, and even more so to make it as a special gift.
