The Great Bean Harvest Of 2014

We had an awesome year for beans this year! We harvested and dried 10 different varieties with a yield of over 12 pounds, not counting the ones we saved for seed!

These will be added to soups, salads and stews (and even used as a pizza topping!) throughout the winter. Of course, they will be used for traditional baked beans too! A couple of the varieties, Green Bean and Scarlet Runner, were just dried for seed.

Anyone who has tasted fresh dried beans knows that you really haven’t tasted beans until you have tried them. They are so much more flavourful than the one you buy and so buttery. We love them!

One funny note, there was lots of rain forcasted for while we would be on our trip to British Columbia and we didn’t want to take the chance of coming home to soggy beans so we cut down all the bean plants and vines and hung them in our shed and the workshop to continue drying while we were gone. It was a good thing we didn’t have any work planned! Here, see for yourself:
