Slip Sliding Away! Here’s a great backyard find! We came across this little beauty today in the woods that we recently cleaned out. It’s a Pink Lady’s Slipper, also known as a Moccasin Flower.
The Pink Lady’s Slipper, (Cypripedium acaule) is the most common of the four Lady’s Slipper types that we have here in Nova Scotia and it is the most common of all our province’s orchids.
These wildflowers grow throughout the forests and although they are not rare they are not all that abundant either so it is a real joy to find one, especially right here in our backyard!
They blossom for only a couple of weeks starting around the beginning of June. As a reminder, we must never pick a Lady’s Slipper because it will kill the plant and it will not reproduce. It is an endangered plant and protected in Nova Scotia.
